As Kentucky’s largest city, Louisville has plenty to offer to both residents and visitors. There is always something to do around the city and many events to look forward to. From one of the largest fireworks displays in the country to live music events, Louisville has a little something for everyone. Check out some of our favorite events that happen right here in Louisville.

Kentucky Derby

When most people think of the city of Louisville or the state of Kentucky, the ever-popular Kentucky Derby probably comes to mind. After all, there is a reason Louisville is lovingly referred to as “Derby City.” Not only is the Kentucky Derby one of the largest annual events in Louisville, drawing people from far and wide, but it has also become part of the culture, along with drinks like the mint julep, which has been the official drink of the Kentucky Derby since 1938.

The Kentucky Derby, held at the famous Churchill Downs racetrack every May, has been around since 1875. It’s an iconic event that commands a crowd of over 150,000 people annually, with spectators all over the world betting millions of dollars on “the fastest two minutes in sports.” Though the Derby is all about the horses, the fashion is certainly something to see.

Most notably, women dress in large hats that are colorful and ornate, adorned with ribbons, lace, flowers, bows, and feathers. The bigger and more ornate, the better. The men’s fashion shouldn’t go unnoticed either. Many men don flat-brimmed straw hats that are reminiscent of the fashion of the 1920s. Paired with seersucker suits and colorful bow ties, some men’s outfits easily rival what the women wear on Derby Day.

If you’re not able to attend the actual Kentucky Derby, cities all over the country host Derby Day parties. And, if you simply can’t get enough of the Derby, check out the Kentucky Derby Museum, located on the Churchill Downs property. You can view racing artifacts, including trophies and Derby glasses. They also have interactive displays, fine art, and the option to go on a tour of the facility.

Thunder Over Louisville

As if the Kentucky Derby isn’t fun and exciting enough, a large and impressive fireworks display, Thunder Over Louisville, takes place right on the Ohio River during the Kentucky Derby Festival in April. Visitors are wowed year after year at the display, which includes more than 60 tons of fireworks set off from the Second Street Bridge and both sides of the river. The Zambelli family, known as the “First Family of Fireworks,” is responsible for the stunning display, so you know it’s a great show.

In addition to a stunning nearly 30-minute display of fireworks, Thunder also includes an all-day air show and the Chow Wagon — a food festival featuring fair favorites and other delectable cuisines.

Mayor’s Music and Art Series

If you’re looking for something to do on the first Thursday of the month, check out the Mayor’s Music and Art Series on the west lawn of the Louisville Metro Hall on West Jefferson Street. Constructed in the 1830s, Metro Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This building is rich in history, and now you can enjoy live music from local artists, right from the expansive and beautiful lawn in the summer and the Mayor’s Gallery in the winter.

KMAC Couture

If fashion is your thing, make sure to attend the annual KMAC Couture, an event that celebrates wearable art in a runway show at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft. Attending is your opportunity to support locals who are in the fashion industry, including designers, artists, costumers, and milliners. Proceeds benefit the wonderful exhibitions at the museum.

Kentucky State Fair

If you haven’t been to the Kentucky State Fair, you’re missing out on a lot of fun. This is where you can go to let loose, play games, enjoy rides, pet livestock, and eat all the carnival food your heart (and stomach!) desires. There are also many small businesses on-site selling their wares, and you won’t want to miss the annual contests for the largest pumpkin and the largest watermelon.

World Championship Horse Show

Of course, the city that hosts the Kentucky Derby also hosts events focused on horses throughout the year. One event that stands out is the World’s Championship Horse Show that takes place every August in conjunction with the state fair. Since 1902, people have gathered to see competitors showcase their equestrian abilities in several divisions. There are more than 2,000 horses to see, and it’s an exciting and prestigious horse show that you’ll love witnessing.

Jack O’Lantern Spectacular

If you think Halloween is all about the trick or treating, think again. Louisville’s annual Jack O’Lantern Spectacular is an event you won’t want to miss. This is a family-friendly event that takes place for the entire month of October. Visit Iroquois Park on New Cut Road any night starting at dusk to see 5,000 pumpkins illuminated as an art show, with more than 100 of them intricately carved into your favorite scenes, movie characters, and Halloween stars. Each year brings a new theme and plenty of music, with proceeds benefiting the Louisville Parks Foundation.

Lights Under Louisville

Louisville knows how to do holidays right. There are many events throughout December, but one that really stands out is Lights Under Louisville, an annual holiday light show that takes place underground. A portion of Louisville’s MEGA Cavern is completely transformed into a winter wonderland, so you can enjoy a 30-minute car ride with your family to take in the spectacular sights. The event even offers a “Breakfast with Santa” option, where you and your family can enjoy a meal with Santa before taking the tour.
